Khao San Road

This is the kind of place that serves really simple, no frills kinda dishes - in that great, mind blowin' kinda way. The kind of food the cooks are cooking for themselves after they've served you ketchup riddled pad thai. Do you know what I mean?

Anyone whose ever worked in the industry knows the best meals in a restaurant are served at the end of the night - after lights out, during staff meal when the cooks are free to cook whatever they like.

Khao San Road is that place. No fancy sauces, wooden elephants, crazy tapestries, sticky noodle dishes - nope! Just basic ingredients executed with a lot of skill.
On this occasion I headed down for some lunch and it was such a treat to be able to just walk in and be seated right away. The last time I was here, it was packed in tighter than the Barton bus during rush hour.
We ordered the Fresh Rolls ($7) - house made chicken sausage, lettuce, carrots, mint leaves and thai basil served with tamarind garlic sauce. The curry of the day ($8) - red chicken curry with jasmine rice, Khao Soi ($11) - braised beef with egg noodles in a golden curry sauce with coconut milk, crispy noodles, green onion, coriander and lime,  the Pad Gra Prao - stir fried minced meat with basil and of course a huge glass of thai iced tea to help cool down our tongues!
The egg noodles in curry was a favourite of mine. It's the second time I've ordered it and it won't be my last. The curry has layers, and layers of flavour and the addition of the egg noodles - although not tradition, incredibly delicious! The minced meat is a super simple incredible dish as well. Packs a lot of flavour! You can add a fried egg for an addition dollar too. Both dishes were equally spicy... which is why we opted to order the curry of the day, last minute. The red curry was very soothing and prepared mild - just what our taste buds needed! The Thai Iced Tea here is bang on and huuuuuuge - like jurassic park huge!

All the curries here are absolutely phenomenal and go down pretty smooth. There isn't a strong after taste and your throat isn't left scratchy.  ha! - that's what she said!

My only disappointment? Their zucchini fritters weren't on the lunch menu! WTF?!
Having Khao San Road so close to my office might be the best thing thats every happened to my taste buds... but might turn into a nightmare for my wallet! The service here was also excellent - we were greeted right away with a huge smile and our server was quick and very polite. They really have their shit together!
