Bitten on Locke Street has been my most favourite discovery this summer! I read an article about Chuck’s one day so the Sok sisters and I decided to head down and grab lunch. We got our order to go and while we were waiting we decided to walk down Locke street. Next thing you know, we see this green cupcake, and walk up these orange steps into absolute sugar heaven. I’ve been so dependent on these pies, I’ve been in as often as three times a week. I just can’t get enough!
The vibrant colours of the shop really make you feel like the oompa loompa’s from Charlie’s Chocolate Factory ran away and opened up a cupcake shop! It’s very colourful and bright and definitely puts you in the mood for something sweet.
Cupcake shops are popping up everywhere right now but it was really quite unique to see whoopie pies on the menu. For anyone who doesn’t know what a whoopie pie is, it is two pieces of cake with frosting or cream filling sandwiched in between. They don’t have a set schedule on which days they have which cupcake/whoopie pie but trust me when I say, you’ll be completely satisfied with everything you walk away with!
I don’t have a sweet tooth at all but there is just something about these whoopie pies and cupcakes that I adore. There is always a perfect ratio of frosting and cake and nothing is ever too sweet. The flavours are all so perfectly balanced. Everything is sooo moist, they do an excellent job with the batter!
Their cupcake and whoopie flavour combinations are super creative as well. For example, the Zesty cupcake – neon green lime cupcake with cream cheese frosting, the Cheeky Monkey – banana cake with honey cinnamon buttercream is my favourite with Cloud 9 – coconut cupcake topped with coconut buttercream and toasted coconut on top is a very close second!
As for the whoopie pies, you’ll always find their signature The Gob – chocolate cake with creamy marshmallow filling available everyday. The other flavours take turn making appearances. I’ve been told you can call ahead to see which flavours they have available and occasionally they’ll tweet what flavours they have that day. I’ve been lucky enough to encounter the Makin’ Whoopi pie – banana cakes filled with marshmallow cream, the I love lucy – red velvet cakes with a cream cheese frosting as well as their Cloud 9 cupcake turned into a whoopie pie! I was suuuper stoked to find those!
The packaging for the pies and cupcakes is absolutely adorable and functional too! Here I am standing in line at the movies with my whoopie pies! Check out their website to see all the available flavours. They are a locally grown business so make sure you show them some love!
